The Greatest Driving Road in America
Pacific Coast Highway — stretching from San Francisco through Big Sur, past Hearst Castle, through Santa Barbara, and down to Los Angeles — is consistently ranked the greatest driving road in America. The combination of ocean cliffs, redwood forests, coastal towns, and sweeping curves makes it a bucket-list drive for car enthusiasts worldwide. But not every car is right for every type of PCH trip.
For the Open-Air Experience: Convertibles
Rolls-Royce Dawn ($995/day): The ultimate PCH cruiser. The four-seat convertible glides over broken pavement, blocks wind noise even at highway speeds, and makes every passenger feel like royalty. Best for couples or a group of four who prioritize comfort and luxury over speed.
Ferrari 488 Spider ($1,295/day): For those who want open-air thrills combined with supercar performance. The retractable hardtop comes down in 14 seconds, and the twin-turbo V8 screams through the canyons. Best for experienced drivers who want to push the car through Big Sur's curves.
For Performance: Supercars
Porsche 911 Turbo S ($795/day): The best overall PCH driver's car. AWD confidence on the coastal curves, 640 HP for the straightaways, and rear seats (barely) for a small bag. It handles PCH's changing surfaces — smooth highway to patched mountain road — better than any other supercar in our fleet.
Lamborghini Huracán ($1,195/day): Maximum drama. The V10 echoes off the cliffs, the looks draw attention at every gas station and overlook, and the AWD system provides security on wet or sandy road sections. Not as comfortable for a 6-hour drive as the Porsche, but infinitely more memorable.
For Groups and Luggage: Luxury SUVs
Mercedes G63 AMG ($595/day): If you are doing PCH with friends or family and have luggage, the G63 is the answer. Five seats, ample cargo space, commanding driving position, and enough performance to enjoy the twisty sections. It is the practical choice that does not sacrifice prestige.
Rivian R1S ($495/day): The eco-conscious PCH road trip. With 400+ miles of range, you can drive from San Francisco to Big Sur and back without charging. Seven seats for the whole family, and the electric powertrain is whisper-quiet for enjoying the natural beauty.
Planning Your PCH Rental
Pick up in San Francisco (SFO delivery) and drop in Los Angeles (LAX), or vice versa. Valkyrie offers one-way rentals between our California markets. Plan two to three days minimum — rushing PCH defeats the purpose. Book fuel stops in advance (gas stations are sparse through Big Sur). And reserve your vehicle at least a week ahead during summer months when PCH bookings peak.
